Men’s Concerns
Men's Concerns
I specialize in treating men simply from treating first responders for almost two decades. While more women are in the first responder world today and participating in therapy –by and large, my office seems to attract more men’s concerns as the years of my professional career has unfolded.
You may be wondering how a woman like me can help. Some of it is circumstance and luck. Sometimes, disclosing to another man what you are struggling with or even failing with compounds the pain. Sometimes, men bring their own masculine energy to therapy, and I bring the complementary feminine energy by default.
My career has helped me identify adverse childhood experiences men harbor and dissociate from. My experience also allows me to dig gently into your sexual development and even help with understanding male physiology and symptoms. It’s not unusual for me to refer my clients to a urologist or medical provider that fills in any gaps of self-care.
I can and do provide psychology education, structured sessions, and homework to help make choosing to change more of a breeze. Many times, honest feedback, careful suggestions, and direct guidance help more than we anticipated. I find myself helping men develop from fearful, vulnerable, and acting out to confident, assertive, and effective in their own lives.
Whether you are coming to counseling for wellness, career development, relationship skill building, or to address a trauma –or any kind of memory—I have this covered. I know you may have been taught: 1) Don’t talk about it, 2) Don’t cry about it, and 3) Don’t ask for help or you will lose your man-card. However, I would argue that living by these moronic rules is outdated and potentially dangerous. Instead, we can take the time to learn your story, to know all of you, and to provide therapy that makes sense to you.
Phrases that I believe I could only develop from working with men in therapy:
Let’s make applied psychology useful and get you out of your stuck point!
Life doesn’t get easier, but you can be wiser!
Do life, so it doesn’t do you!
Life may be dangerous, chaotic, and unfair but you do not have to mirror it!
Grit Code: Upgrade your response™
If you are a life-partner to a man, and you are looking for the right counselor, I understand. You can inquire, but ultimately, he must consent to treatment. I do provide couple’s counseling as well. I will assess of each of you, after an initial assessment of both of you together. This allows me to see the relationship and how it unfolds in the therapy-setting. We will use the same treatment modalities for individuals, added some important skill-building: 1) how to value each other if you want to stay, 2) how to build trust and commitment, 3) how to manage conflict resolution without moral injury, 4) how to be intimate so that sex is meaningful, bonding, and enjoyable, 5) how to work with finances with integrity, 6) how to parent with dignity and respect for your babies (no matter what age they are, and even if they have paws), 7) how to do and be more fun –life is short! And 8) how to recognize on a deep, spiritual level that you are okay!
